About Robert Corona

Robert J. Corona DO, CPE, MBA, FCAP, FASCPRobert Corona DO, MBA is the Chief Executive Officer of Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, New York. He was appointed in January 2019.

Prior to his appointment he served as the John B. Henry Professor and chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, medical director of Neuropathology Chief Innovation Officer and Vice President for Business Development at Upstate Medical University. The hospital is part of SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Corona is an experienced neuropathologist and leader in bioinformatics and the application of technology at the cutting‐edge of medicine. He is the author of numerous published manuscripts and contributor to patent applications and new device evaluations required by the FDA for new product development.

At Upstate, Corona has led the development and implementation of the Upstate MIND (Medical Innovation and Novel Discovery) at the CNY Biotech Accelerator. He founded Upstate’s Telemedicine and Medical Informatics Program in 1995, which at that time was named one of two national Healthcare Open Systems Trial sites and was nominated for the Computerworld/Smithsonian Award for Excellence in Medicine.

As a professor he received Best Teacher of the Year honors and the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

From 1996‐2012, he held a leadership position at Welch Allyn Inc. as Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical and Scientific Affairs. He was one of the leaders of the national "Office of the Future" program, which was a collaboration of multiple corporations to bring future devices to the outpatient setting. During his time at Welch Allyn he also maintained teaching and clinical services to Upstate.

Corona received his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. He subsequently performed clinical training including a rotating internship at Southeastern Medical Center in Miami, followed by training in neurology, anatomic pathology and neuropathology at Upstate, with a special fellowship in neuropathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. He received his MBA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He is board certified in anatomic pathology, neuropathology and clinical informatics by the American Board of Pathology and medical management and certified physician executive by the American College of Physician Executives (now called the American Association of Physician Leadership).

A member of many state and national organizations, he presently is an appointed member of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners and a Senior Fellow in the Association of Pathology Chairs. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Osteopathic Foundation, a member of the Federation of State Medical Boards Working Group on Telemedicine, and as an appointed member of the Office of Professional Medical Conduct, New York State Department of Health. He is an emeritus member of the New York State Board for Medicine. He was recently named to Becker’s Top 100 CEO’s to Know as well as to Cornell’s Institute for Healthy Futures.
