Why We Work in Academic Medicine

Standpoint Survey

StandPoint Surveys is a collaborative partnership between the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and U.S. medical schools around the country focusing on measuring and enhancing medical school faculty engagement. Formerly known as the “Faculty Forward” survey, 70 medical schools have participated with over 50,000 respondents.

Upstate faculty were surveyed in 2019 and 2022. For continuous quality improvement, we continue to address identified challenges.

“Engaged employees are cognitively and emotionally invested in the mission and activities of your organization.” —AAMC

The 2019 StandPoint Faculty Engagement Survey assessed 15 dimensions of U.S. medical school faculty engagement—defined as the emotional and cognitive attitudes that faculty members have toward their workplace experiences (i.e., often referred to as “job satisfaction”) and behavioral outcomes such as contribution and effort.

The 2022 StandPoint Pulse: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Climate Survey was co-developed with the AAMCand NCOM Department Diversity Advocates, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and the Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development. The purpose of the survey was to learn how our faculty members view specific faculty experiences and workplace climate, compared to faculty at peer institutions. The understanding gained through the data collected during this survey allows enhancement of programs and policies to make Upstate a more inclusive, equitable and appealing place to work.
